ramblings

My blog has been rather ignored of late. Unfortunately this is due to hideous over-committments on my part. People keep telling me to give up one of my jobs, but i'm just too damn stubborn - and i like money!

I had a 20 minute German oral test today. It wasn't quite as bad as i was expecting, though genders and endings certainly fly out the window when one has to think on one's feet. So that was the first of three assignments/tests i have before term finishes in 3 days time. Then i have about four days to study for a german literature exam, which will involve me rereading 2 novels, 2 plays, and about 5 short stories! Fun times ahead...

Meanwhile i'm still juggling a couple of jobs, rehearsals for the university's upcoming productoin of Carmen, and starting to worry about the Christchurch competitions.

I soooo cant wait until the 7th, when my first and only exam is. Afterwards i get to relax for about 3 weeks, or relax as much as is possible while still doing several hours of singing every day!

Forming thoughts in English is hard at the moment. Either because ive spent the entire day reading and thinking auf deutsch, or because im bloody tired ... Adieu

Capping Show '06 - 2Crass, 2Humourous

Boys in tails are
always hot! Especially when they're as dirty as the Sextet boys. Back row: Rewi, Ieti, Brendan, Axel. Front row: Jimmy, Craig.

Phwoooar - Hot Sexytet girls! From left to right: Suzie, Kate, Claire, Julia, Christina, Katie.

Sextet and Sexytet were fantastic as always, but am too tired to write anything detailed about the actual show. I did think the plot was pretty weak though; last year's story was a lot more fun, and made more sense! But as always, there were loads of jokes, lots of laughter, and fantastic student actors! Definitely 2 Crass, 2 Humorous.

Goethe!

Ok, so i havent posted in ages. I've been busy, but thats not an excuse, just an observation.

I finished reading Faust today, while sitting in the Staff Club at university drinking a flat white. I was so engrossed in the last three or four scenes that my coffee grew cold, forgotten on the table in front of me. It's a freaking fantastic play though. I can imagine that it would be incredibly difficult to stage in a realistic way as its so fragmented and 'snapshot' like. I wonder if this leads to a load of minimalist and/or avant garde stagings that people dislike...? I guess the scenery isnt really the most important thing, but still, to see some of the play's fantastic feats performed on stage would be amazing! I would so love to see it performed in Germany!

One of the cool things that i noticed while i was reading it was just how 'human' Goethe's writing is. Its not a grandiloquent tome of Aufklärung philosophy, but a deepy affecting and human tragedy, interspersed with slang, terribly offensive language, in-jokes for Goethe's contemporaries, not to mention fantastic rhyming verse and amazing prose.

Anyway, yes... i could waffle for ages, but i wont as i have to write an essay on it later this week and dont want to talk myself out prematurely. I am definitely going to read more Goethe when i get time though! I think i will read Die Leiden des jungen Werther next, although i probably wont have time until after exams.. oooh im excited though :D
